OBSERVATION DISTILLED. Drawing from the natural world or intimately personal environments, the duality of strength and fragility is an underlying concept across my imagery. I collect and record physical experiences of time and place.
My images are intermediaries between the natural or constructed environment and a particular moment - narratives of the perceived world - which at any moment is stunning, visceral, tragic, breathtaking and renewable.
WORKS ON PAPER
My nest is drawing and printmaking, interpreted broadly.
Aerial imagery, atmospheric perspective, layers of marks, light and shapes intrigue me visually. Flying in and piloting small aircraft in the past brought me into the immersion of spatial light, shape and color available from low altitude flight. I’ve always photographed or quick-sketched from foggy window seats during take-off and landings on commercial travel, a kind of visual note-taking I use to develop pieces later.
Sabbaticals, professional grants and residencies created opportunities to continue work in Latin America, with long periods particularly in Mexico and Costa Rica, also Cuba, and Western Europe. A 2015 sabbatical enabled me to focus on drawing and collecting source imagery at Selby Gardens and other distinctive Sarasota area natural preserves.
After graduating from Boston College, A.B. Sociology, pursued undergraduate studio work at School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Attended Rhode Island School of Design, undergraduate and graduate, before receiving M.Ed, Expressive Therapy from the Institute for Art and Human Development, Lesley University. Awarded professional registration, A.T.R., from American Art Therapy Association; attended Middelloo Institute program, creative therapies, Amersfoort, The Netherlands. Certificate in Interior Design, Commonwealth of MA, Massasoit College.
November 2016, awarded Professor Emerita, at The Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, after teaching full time undergraduate and graduate courses. With years of chairing Studio Foundation Department then coordinating the drawing program, I currently teach fall semester drawing courses and typically spring International studio program in Puebla, Mexico.
